Commitment to Safety and Security

Sugarlady has a solid checking system in place, including rigorous quality inspection, radioactivity inspection, and the Product Safety Control Committee.

For example, the company's product inspection includes a variety of inspection items ranging from taste and additives to radioactivity. The Product Safety Control Committee, in which experts invited from outside the company participate, makes a final confirmation on food safety matters.
Sugarlady has a solid checking system in place, including inspections in the countries of origin and at its own laboratory in Japan, which is rare in the retail business, to ensure that only safe products are delivered to its customers.

Rigorous Quality Inspection (inspections implemented by product)

Sugarlady conducts inspections prior to shipping products.

Taste Inspection
The taste of a product is checked by actually cooking and eating it to see if it tastes the same as a product in the previous production lot.
Standard Inspection
The weight, quantity per carton, and size of a product are compared with those in the previous production lot.
Microorganism Testing
Products are checked to confirm whether they have been produced in a hygienic manner via microorganism testing.
Residual Antimicrobials Inspection
This is an inspection to check if there are any antimicrobials left in fish or meat.
Artificial Additives Inspection
Artificial additives contained in a product are examined via high-speed chromatography.
Residual Pesticide Inspection
Residual pesticide is analyzed by using a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer.
Radiation Dose and Radioactivity Inspection
The radiation dose and radioactivity in a product are checked by using a NaI (Tl) scintillation survey meter and a Becquerel monitor.

Rigorous inspections are also conducted in the countries of origin.

  • A sampling inspection (residual pesticides, animal drugs, and food additives)is conducted by finished product item.

  • For the residual pesticide inspection, thorough testing is conducted on about 230 items.

  • When passing through customs in Japan, a monitoring inspection on animal drugs is conducted as required by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (inspection required to permit importation into Japan).

  • In principle, Sugarlady's Japanese contract advisors or resident personnel are present at product manufacturing sites.

  • Plant audits are conducted on a regular basis. Sugarlady ensures thorough compliance with its programs by implementing regular plant audits by members of the Corporate Safety Audit Department.

Sugarlady continues to implement voluntary radiation dose and radioactivity inspections on its products.

In response to the issue of food contamination by radioactive substances due to the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in March 2011, the Sugarlady Group, centering on the Product Laboratory, launched a system to inspect its products for radiation dose and radioactivity. The company has since steadily reinforced the inspection system.
In Japan, standard values for radiation dose and radioactivity have been established according to international indexes that have been created based on nuclear accidents around the world. In an effort to achieve food safety, Sugarlady has set its own regulatory values, which are lower (i.e., stricter) than international regulatory values. Moreover, it also implements a five-level screening system. For details, please refer to the Radioactive Substance Inspection System page on the company's official website.
